Usher for Plaza and Black Box Theatres

Career Opportunities

We are currently looking for volunteers to help usher for productions in our Plaza and Black Box Theatres. Volunteer ushers are an integral part of the audience experience for fringe theatre companies and ensembles that produce hundreds of performances each season. Volunteers sign up for available shifts roughly one month before each performance. 

Volunteer responsibilities:

  • Arriving one hour before showtime
  • Handing out programs
  • Taking tickets
  • Helping seat patrons
  • Answering basic questions about the production
  • Light clean up after the performance
  • Assisting with emergency evacuation in case of emergency

Requirements:

  • General weeknight and weekend availability
  • Dress code is event black clothing

Gallery Attendant

Volunteer Opportunities

Boston Center for the Arts accepts applications year-round for volunteer Gallery Attendants in the Mills Gallery. The Mills Gallery Volunteer Program offers an opportunity to gain experience, knowledge, and insight into a non-profit arts organization and the Boston arts community. Gallery Attendants are the face of the Mills Gallery and an important link between our programs, gallery and our public. They oversee the safety of exhibited work while creating a welcoming environment for visitors.

Responsibilities:

  • Opening and closing gallery
  • Enforcing gallery rules in a polite but firm manner
  • Collecting visitor information
  • Becoming knowledgeable about the exhibit and artists on view as well as BCA-wide programs
  • Initiating and encouraging dialogue with and among visitors
  • Serving as a general resource for our public by providing information about BCA programs, exhibits, performances and events
  • Assisting in event/performance production in the gallery
  • Assisting with emergency evacuation in case of emergency.

  • Training in setting up/shutting down the gallery
